Ludwig Göransson won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for his work on Sinners, though viewers watching the broadcast may not have realized it.
The 2026 Golden Globes aired live on CBS on Sunday, January 11, from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The award for Best Original Score was presented to Göransson
by Charli XCX and Joe Keery during a commercial break rather than during the televised portion of the ceremony.
Before the awards show, fellow composer Hans Zimmer criticized the Golden Globes' decision not to air the category on TV, and later, one of the show's producers explained the reasoning behind it.
Zimmer, who was nominated for Best Original Song for his work on F1, spoke with Variety during the 2026 Golden Globes pre-show. He described the choice as unfortunate, saying it failed to honor the composers who work tirelessly on films. He highlighted the sacrifices involved in filmmaking, including sleepless nights and missed family time, adding that his children sometimes do not recognize him at home.
"I think the work should always be acknowledged," Zimmer said. "This year is a fantastic year for composers. You do not have a movie without them."
Following the broadcast, Golden Globes producer Glenn Weiss spoke to Variety about why the Best Original Score award was not included in the televised segment. According to Weiss, the production team does not decide the number of awards presented during the broadcast. Instead, those decisions are made through broader discussions about what fits into the live show.
Weiss explained that alternative presentation methods, such as giving awards on the red carpet, have been used on other shows. He said the Golden Globes team aimed to present the award in front of peers and other nominees to maintain respect.
Göransson's speech is available online, and Weiss noted it includes a cutaway to Sinners writer and director Ryan Coogler when mentioned. Weiss emphasized that the online presentation is handled carefully and respectfully, ensuring it is not a brief mention but a proper recognition of the winner.
When asked about the timing of notifications, as some composers reportedly learned their category would not be televised just two days before the event, Weiss said the organization facilitates communication with nominees. He added that he was not fully aware of the reasoning behind the timing of those announcements.
