For over four decades, Georges Blanc's legendary restaurant in southeastern France held the prestigious honor of three Michelin stars. But now, in a shocking move that has stunned the culinary world, the Michelin Guide has stripped the historic establishment of its third star.
The 82-year-old chef, a titan in the world of French cuisine, admitted he was blindsided by the decision. "We weren't expecting it," Blanc told AFP, adding that while losing a star was disappointing, the restaurant would now become "less elitist and a little more accessible."
The loss marks the end of an era for the family-run restaurant, which has held at least one Michelin star since 1929. The culinary dynasty began with Georges' grandmother, Élisa Blanc, whose impeccable cooking first put the restaurant on the map. Georges Blanc took the reins in the 1960s and elevated the establishment to a gastronomic landmark, earning its coveted third star in 1981. For over 40 years, it maintained its place among the best in the world—until now.
Michelin's director, Gwendal Poullenec, explained that the decision was part of the guide's efforts to "reflect the evolution of the quality of the restaurant." However, he still praised Blanc's lifelong contributions, calling the restaurant a "true gastronomic destination."
Despite the setback, Blanc's culinary empire remains vast. He owns multiple restaurants, hotels, and food shops, ensuring that his influence on French cuisine endures. While the Michelin downgrade stings, Blanc is taking it in stride, determined to keep serving exquisite food to his loyal diners. As the Michelin Guide prepares to unveil its annual star rankings at the end of the month, the restaurant world is left wondering—who will be next to rise or fall?
