A shooting incident at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee on Thursday has left at least six people injured and led to a man being taken into custody. The shooting occurred around noon near the student union, prompting immediate lockdowns across the campus and surrounding schools.

Authorities responded swiftly to what was initially reported as an active shooter situation. The university issued an alert at 12:01 p.m. urging students to shelter in place, stating: "Police have responded to an active shooter situation call at the Student Union. Continue to shelter in place." A later alert warned, "Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures."

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare spokesperson Sarah Cannon confirmed that the hospital was "receiving and treating people affected by the shooting," but declined to provide a specific number, saying, "Details are still unfolding." A representative added, "Our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected."

Media outlets have since confirmed that six people were injured, with at least one in critical condition. Videos captured at the scene showed heavily armed officers running through campus as emergency vehicles surrounded the area.

Governor Ron DeSantis shared on X , "Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding." Attorney General James Uthmeier also stated, "My office is responding to the active shooter situation on FSU's campus and we will provide updates as they become available." Meanwhile, Attorney General Pam Bondi noted that the Justice Department was in touch with FBI agents at the scene.

Students recalled moments of terror and confusion. Ryan Cedergren, a 21-year-old communications student, said he and about 30 others hid in a bowling alley under the student union after witnessing students flee a nearby bar. "In that moment, it was survival," he said. He added that after about 15 minutes, police escorted them out, and he saw someone receiving emergency care on the lawn.

Emily Palmer, another student, said she received a "dangerous situation" alert while in the union. "I'm shaking ... It's just a lot going on," she told CNN. Witnesses also reported hearing 15 to 20 gunshots, and one graduate student claimed to have seen a young man armed with a handgun.

The status of the shooter has not been officially released, but reports confirm that one man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
