The U.S. military said Tuesday it shot down an Iranian drone that aggressively approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln while the ship was operating in international waters in the Arabian Sea. The incident came amid heightened regional tensions as President Donald Trump weighs diplomatic options alongside the possibility of military action against Tehran.
According to U.S. Central Command, the unmanned aircraft flew toward the carrier with unclear intent while the Lincoln was roughly 500 miles from Iran's southern coast. American forces attempted de-escalatory measures, but the drone continued to maneuver toward the vessel. An F-35 fighter jet launched from the carrier destroyed the drone in what officials described as an act of self-defense. No U.S. personnel were injured and no equipment was damaged.
Oil markets reacted quickly, with U.S. crude prices moving higher following reports of the confrontation, reflecting investor sensitivity to disruptions near key energy transit routes.
Hours later, Iranian forces also harassed a U.S.-flagged merchant ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important chokepoints for global oil shipments. Iranian vessels and a drone threatened to board and seize the tanker, according to Central Command. A U.S. guided-missile destroyer intervened, escorted the ship, and the situation was defused without incident.
The back-to-back encounters underscore the fragile security environment as Washington and Tehran prepare for talks aimed at easing tensions. U.S. officials say discussions led by special envoy Steve Witkoff remain on the schedule, though disagreements over the location and scope of the negotiations have complicated planning.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president continues to prioritize diplomacy but maintains a range of options. "For diplomacy to work, there must be a willing partner," she said, adding that military force remains on the table if talks fail.
The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has been deployed to the region alongside multiple destroyers and advanced aircraft as the United States signals both deterrence and readiness, even as it publicly leaves the door open to a negotiated path forward. Officials warned miscalculation could rapidly escalate incidents into broader regional conflict.
