Elon Musk plans to produce his own version of Homer's Odyssey, this time powered entirely by artificial intelligence.
On July 22, the billionaire announced on X that his AI platform Grok Imagine will release a full-length adaptation of the ancient Greek epic "before this year ends."
Musk wrote, "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer."
He shared a three-minute AI-generated clip depicting Odysseus and the nymph Calypso, offering a glimpse of what his project could look like.
The announcement comes just days after Christopher Nolan's star-studded adaptation of The Odyssey debuted to critical acclaim and box office success, earning more than $264 million globally in its opening weekend.
The film features Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Lupita Nyong'o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
Musk has been outspoken in his criticism of Nolan's casting choices, amplifying posts that attacked the inclusion of Nyong'o and trans actor Elliot Page. In one widely shared post, Musk accused Nolan of "desecrating Homer" and claimed the director was pandering to "woke rules required to win an Oscar." He later added, "[Nolan] has lost his integrity."
Despite Musk's attempts to stir controversy, Nolan's film has been embraced by audiences and critics alike. Nyong'o herself responded to backlash in May, saying, "Our cast is representative of the world. I'm not spending my time thinking of a defence. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not."
Nolan also dismissed the uproar, remarking, "These conversations that happen before people see the film – they're always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet."
Whether Grok Imagine's version will rival Nolan's blockbuster remains to be seen, but Musk is betting that AI can deliver a more "authentic" take on one of literature's oldest epics.
