President Donald Trump has suggested renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean after himself, proposing "Trump Ocean" or "Ocean of the Americas" during a campaign rally in Tennessee.

Speaking to supporters in Clarksville on Saturday, October 10, Trump revisited his push to rename geographical landmarks, saying he wanted an ocean and a major river to bear new names before his presidency ends.

"We've got the Gulf, we've got a beautiful lake, and now someone said, 'You need a river,'" Trump said. "I don't wanna change the name of the Hudson River."

He continued: "We need a river, we need an ocean. So, I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific. We call it 'Trump Ocean' or 'Ocean of the Americas.' Something like that."

Trump also said the proposed changes should happen before he leaves office, adding, "We have to. We should have before I get out."

However, he ruled out renaming the Mississippi River, saying he liked the state of Mississippi and pointing to his electoral success there.

The latest suggestion follows a series of naming changes pursued by the Trump administration. In January 2025, Trump moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America through an executive order. In August 2026, he also announced that Lake Ontario would be called Lake America in US government usage.

Trump previously explained his decision to rename the Gulf, telling reporters: "We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it's appropriate. It's appropriate."

His administration also restored the name Mount McKinley for North America's tallest mountain, reversing the use of Denali, which was officially adopted under former President Barack Obama in 2015 to recognize the name used by Alaska Native people.

Trump has floated other geographical renaming ideas, including calling the US state of New Mexico "New America," although he indicated that residents would have a say in that proposal.

Despite his latest comments, the president has not formally proposed renaming either ocean. His remarks at the Tennessee rally were met with laughter and applause from some attendees.

For now, "Trump Ocean" remains an idea rather than an officially announced policy.
