LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, are on the brink of making NBA history as the first-ever father-son duo to play for the same team. This dream, first mentioned by LeBron years ago, is now closer to reality. On Thursday, Bronny, the eldest son of the NBA's all-time scoring leader and four-time champion, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, the team his father has played for since 2018. Bronny was the 55th overall pick in the second round.
Despite reports that agent Rich Paul, representing both father and son, advised teams not to draft Bronny, he is now heading to Los Angeles. "Beyond blessed," Bronny wrote on Instagram after the draft.
Adding further intrigue, LeBron James can become a free agent next week, potentially choosing to leave the Lakers. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka highlighted the historical significance of a potential father-son duo, calling it magical and emphasizing that NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform. While the draft move doesn't guarantee Bronny a spot on the Lakers' roster next season, it raises the possibility of them playing together—a first in NBA history.
Critics have dismissed accusations of nepotism. Adrian Wojnarowski pointed out that nepotism is widespread in the NBA, across ownership, front offices, and coaching roles. LeBron's incredible longevity, entering his 22nd season, makes this father-son scenario possible.
Bronny, listed at 6ft 1in, is shorter than initially thought but has shown significant athleticism and defensive skills. Lakers GM Pelinka praised Bronny's character and work ethic, qualities the team values highly. Bronny, who played one year at USC, averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game last season. He missed the start of the season due to a congenital heart defect but was cleared for NBA play last month.
Although 24 players were drafted before him, Bronny's selection at No. 55 garnered significant attention. Historically, the 55th pick rarely produces standout NBA players, but there have been notable exceptions in later rounds, like three-time MVP Nikola Jokić and Hall of Famer Manu Ginóbili.
As the draft unfolded, it became clear that while Bronny's journey will be closely watched, the excitement around the possibility of him playing alongside his father captivates NBA fans. If it happens, it will be a monumental moment, adding another chapter to LeBron's storied career and marking a unique milestone in NBA history.
