Ryan Garcia's recent victory over Devin Haney has been overshadowed by accusations of cheating after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) both before and after the fight. The controversy erupted as Garcia, 25, put in an impressive performance against Haney in April, prompting scrutiny over the legitimacy of his win.
Garcia vehemently denies the allegations, asserting, "Everybody knows that I don't cheat. Never taken a steroid, I don't even know where to get steroids. I barely take supplements." Despite his protests, questions linger over the presence of Ostarine, a banned substance known to aid muscle growth, in his system. "Bro there's only one way. If all my tests came back clean all the way up to the day before my fight and the day after, obviously they're setting me up bro," Garcia told Jake.
In a tense video call between Garcia and friend Jake Paul, Paul expressed his dismay, stating, "If you did do it, then that’s really fcked up bro and I’m going to be pissed off. That’s fcked up." Garcia maintained his innocence, insisting, "I didn't do it. If I did it bro, and I know damn well that I didn't, I would've quit boxing. I didn't do it. I don't think you're doubting me, I just think you're trying to ask questions just like everybody else."
The New York State Athletic Commission is investigating the matter, emphasizing "Safety, fairness, and integrity in professional athletic competition are essential. The Commission is in communication with Vada and is reviewing the matter." Garcia now faces the option to request testing of his B sample within ten days, potentially offering further clarification on the situation.
Despite the allegations, Garcia remains resolute, even as criticism mounts. UFC legend Conor McGregor publicly admonished him, urging him to "get your head together or kill yourself" in a chilling message. However, Garcia remains undeterred, seen enjoying a night out in Las Vegas shortly after the news broke.
