England has appointed former captain Charlotte Edwards as their new head coach, a move that marks a significant shift in leadership following the departure of Jon Lewis. Edwards, 45, remains England's all-time leading run-scorer and steps into the role after a stellar playing career and impressive coaching record. She takes over from Lewis, who was dismissed in March following England's crushing 16-0 Ashes defeat in Australia.

With over 300 appearances for England and more than 200 as captain, Edwards has an extensive legacy in the sport. During her decade-long captaincy, she led the team to three Ashes victories and secured both the 50-over and 20-over World Cups in 2009. Despite her achievements, she was unexpectedly replaced by Heather Knight in 2016, who in turn held the position for nine years before being dismissed in the aftermath of the recent Ashes disappointment. Knight will, however, continue as a player under Edwards' leadership.

Expressing her excitement about the role, Edwards stated, "I cannot wait to take this team forward and drive us to success. It means the world to me to have the three lions on my chest once again. Leading England as captain was my life for 10 years, and I will forever be passionate about this team and our legacy. We have such a talented group of players, and I am excited about working with them and improving them both as individuals and as a team."

As England searches for a new captain, vice-captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has shown interest in the role, while spinner Charlie Dean has also hinted at being open to the opportunity. The leadership overhaul follows a review into the Ashes led by Clare Connor, director of women's cricket, who emphasized that Edwards was the standout candidate to lead England's rebuild.

Connor praised Edwards' credentials, calling her a "proven winner" with an extensive track record of success. Since transitioning into coaching, Edwards has excelled, leading Southern Vipers to domestic dominance and guiding Southern Brave to victory in the women's Hundred in 2023. Her impact extends internationally, with Mumbai Indians securing two Women's Premier League titles under her leadership and Sydney Sixers reaching the Big Bash final in 2022.

"When we drew up the criteria for the job, it became apparent very quickly that Charlotte was the outstanding candidate," Connor said. "She has the experience, passion, and expertise to lead this team to success. The results she has achieved as a head coach in multiple environments, since retiring as one of England's greatest players, are a testament to her relentless drive and the standards she sets."

Edwards' tenure begins with England's home white-ball series against West Indies and India this summer, leading up to the 50-over World Cup in India in October. Former teammate Lydia Greenway, who has worked with Edwards at Mumbai, is optimistic about the appointment, believing it will steer England in the right direction after two turbulent years.

While England showed promise during their thrilling drawn Ashes series in 2023, their struggles in two T20 World Cups and the heavy defeat to Australia earlier this year exposed deeper issues. Greenway highlighted Edwards' high expectations and ability to set clear standards from the outset, reinforcing confidence that she will positively influence the squad.

Of the five domestic or franchise teams Edwards has coached since 2020, her sides have finished in the top three of their respective competitions in 16 out of 19 attempts. Greenway acknowledged that Edwards would need time to implement her style but emphasized the crucial relationships she has already built with England's players.

With an urgent need for a new captain and a significant rebuilding process ahead, Edwards faces a monumental task. England's fitness, athleticism, and overall mindset have been questioned, adding to the challenges she must address. However, those familiar with her leadership, including Greenway and Dean, believe there is no one better suited to take on the job.
