The Green Bay Packers have solidified their commitment to quarterback Jordan Love with a four-year, $220 million contract extension. This deal, finalized on July 26, 2024, makes Love the tied-highest paid player in NFL history, matching the annual value of Trevor Lawrence's recent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The extension includes a substantial $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in new guarantees, as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. This significant investment comes after Love's impressive first season as a starter, where he led the NFL's youngest team to a 10-9 record and a playoff berth.
Love's journey to this landmark deal has been remarkable. Drafted 26th overall in 2020, he spent three seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers before taking the reins in 2023. Despite a challenging 3-6 start, Love finished the season strong, throwing for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst expressed confidence in Love's future, stating, "We know he's our franchise quarterback and we're ready to move forward." This sentiment is backed by Love's late-season surge, during which he threw 21 touchdowns with only one interception over a nine-game stretch.
The timing of Love's deal coincides with other significant quarterback contracts in the league. On the same day, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million extension. Earlier in the offseason, Detroit's Jared Goff secured a four-year, $212 million deal, while Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence inked a five-year, $275 million extension.
Love's performance in 2023 put him in elite company. He joined Kurt Warner (1999) and Patrick Mahomes (2018) as the only quarterbacks to throw for at least 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns in their first season making multiple starts. His 32 touchdown passes ranked second in the league, behind only Dallas' Dak Prescott.
With this contract, the Packers are betting on Love's continued growth and potential to lead the team to future success. As training camp begins, all eyes will be on Love to see how he builds upon his breakout season and justifies his position as one of the NFL's highest-paid players.
