Mercedes-AMG will make a highly-anticipated return to the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2025, teaming up with experienced outfit Iron Lynx. It’s the first WEC entry from the German manufacturer and also the first time since 1999 that its cars will have taken part in the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The two Mercedes-AMG GT3s will contest in the LMGT3 category and see the return of the three-pointed star at the Circuit de la Sarthe after 26 years. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is a car that has proven to be successful, having won the 24-hour classics at Spa and Nurburgring.

Iron Lynx, which previously represented Lamborghini in the LMGT3 and Hypercar classes, will now field the Mercedes-AMG GT3s. The team’s drivers for the 2025 season include Matteo Cressoni and Claudio Schiavoni.

Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Christoph Sagemuller expressed excitement about the return: “It’s no secret that we’ve been very keen for some time to bring the Three-pointed Star back to Le Mans. The 2025 season with the FIA WEC entry is the right moment – we are returning to La Sarthe after 26 years!”

The news comes as Lamborghini reassesses its LMDh programme, with the Italian firm thought to concentrate on the IMSA SportsCar Championship in North America. That move has freed up space in the WEC grid, which is expected to expand from 37 to as many as 40 cars.

Andrea Piccini, Iron Lynx Team Principal welcomed Mercedes-AMG as a partner: “We are really proud to welcome Mercedes-AMG as a partner. In addition to being an amazing brand, they are super motivated, determined and hungry for success”.

Mercedes will also introduce a new GT3 car to supersede the long-serving current model, bringing development in-house rather than using its long-term partner HWA. This should further raise the bar for the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the LMGT3 class.

The FIA WEC Prologue at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha will usher in the 2025 season, followed by the 1,812km of Qatar race on February 28. Mercedes-AMG and Iron Lynx are planning for an exciting and competitive season ahead.

On this return to Le Mans, Mercedes-AMG will strive to push things a notch further within the WEC and build upon the successes it has garnered thus far within endurance racing.
