Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone after a race full of twists, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli slipped out of the points following car trouble.
Leclerc got off the line quickly, moving past Antonelli and holding the lead through the early laps. Antonelli later fought back and briefly took first place after Leclerc's pit stop, but his run ended when a problem with the front-left wheel shield forced him into the pits twice.
He crossed the line in ninth but was pushed down to 16th after a five-second penalty for track limits.
The race took another turn when Max Verstappen spun into the gravel on Lap 48, bringing out the Safety Car. At first, race control signaled there would be one final lap of racing, but that call was reversed.
The FIA later explained the "safety car in this lap" message was sent in error because of a software issue. With the Safety Car staying out until the finish, the order was locked in.
Leclerc took the flag for Ferrari, his first win since Austin in 2024. George Russell finished second after staying out during the Safety Car period, cutting Antonelli's championship lead to 25 points. Lewis Hamilton came home third but faces investigation for a yellow-flag incident after Verstappen's crash.
Lando Norris gave the home crowd more to cheer by finishing fourth for McLaren. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar was fifth, followed by Racing Bulls teammates Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Gabriel Bortoleto placed eighth for Audi, while Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly secured the final points for Alpine.
Further back, Oscar Piastri recovered to 11th after early damage, Carlos Sainz was 12th, and Haas drivers Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon finished 13th and 14th. Sergio Perez took 15th for Cadillac, while Antonelli's penalty left him 16th. Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll rounded out the field.
Three drivers failed to finish: Verstappen after his crash, Alex Albon following damage from an early clash, and Nico Hulkenberg, who retired with a mechanical issue.
Antonelli, who had built a big lead earlier in the season, now has Russell closing in and Hamilton not far behind as the fight moves to Spa in two weeks.
