Red Bull Racing has confirmed that New Zealander Liam Lawson will join Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season, replacing Sergio Perez. This announcement follows Perez's departure after a lackluster 2024 campaign in which Red Bull lost the Constructors' Championship despite Verstappen securing his fourth consecutive world title.

Lawson, 22, emerged as the top candidate for the seat after impressing during his stints with Red Bull's junior team, Visa Cash App Racing Bulls (VCARB). Team Principal Christian Horner praised Lawson's abilities, stating, "Liam's performances over the course of his two stints with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls have demonstrated that he's not only capable of delivering strong results but that he's also a real racer, not afraid to mix it with the best and come out on top."

Lawson's journey to Red Bull began with his debut as a substitute driver for Daniel Ricciardo at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, where he scored points in his second race in Singapore. Despite limited experience, he showcased resilience and skill, earning recognition through standout performances, such as his ninth-place finishes in the United States and Sao Paulo Grands Prix in 2024. Reflecting on the opportunity, Lawson said, "To be announced as a Red Bull Racing driver is a lifelong dream for me, this is something I've wanted and worked towards since I was eight years old."

Perez's exit marks the latest in a series of second-driver replacements at Red Bull. Since Daniel Ricciardo's departure in 2018, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and now Perez have struggled to meet the team's high expectations. Horner acknowledged the challenge Lawson faces, remarking, "There's no doubt that racing alongside Max, a four-time champion and undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers ever seen in F1, is a daunting task, but I'm sure Liam can rise to that challenge and deliver some outstanding results for us next year."

The decision to promote Lawson over Yuki Tsunoda reflects Red Bull's confidence in his potential. Despite being out-qualified by Tsunoda in some races, Lawson's combative drives and ability to handle high-pressure situations, including a battle with two-time champion Fernando Alonso, have solidified his position.
