Max Verstappen’s attempt to reset after a difficult start to his Formula One season ended in frustration after he was disqualified from a race he had convincingly won at the Nürburgring. The Dutch driver, a four time Formula One world champion, had taken part in a four hour endurance event in Germany on Saturday, only to see his victory overturned due to a technical violation involving tyre usage.
Verstappen, competing in the GT3 class, delivered a strong performance from the outset. Driving on the demanding 24.358 kilometre configuration of the Nürburgring, he secured pole position by a margin of nearly two seconds, underlining his pace and adaptability outside Formula One machinery. Sharing driving duties with French driver Jules Gounon and Spaniard Daniel Juncadella, Verstappen helped guide their Mercedes car, run by the Winward team and featuring Red Bull branding, to what initially appeared to be a dominant win.
The trio crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead of almost a minute over their closest competitors. However, the celebrations were short lived. Race officials later determined that the team had used seven sets of tyres during the event, exceeding the maximum allowance of six sets. This breach of regulations left the stewards with no alternative but to disqualify the car from the results.
The decision was confirmed by Winward team principal Christian Hohenadel, who admitted the mistake was internal. He described the outcome as difficult to accept but acknowledged that the rules had been clearly broken. According to Hohenadel, the error in tyre allocation ultimately cost the team a well earned victory and overshadowed what had otherwise been an impressive performance.
For Verstappen, the disqualification adds another layer of frustration during a period that has not gone smoothly. He began the Formula One season with a sixth place finish at the Australian Grand Prix and then failed to finish the following race in Shanghai. Seeking both track time and a change of pace, his participation in the Nürburgring event was seen as an opportunity to regain momentum and enjoy a different racing environment.
Despite the setback, Verstappen has already expressed his intention to return to the Nürburgring for the prestigious 24 hour race scheduled for May. His performance in the shorter event demonstrated both his speed and competitiveness in endurance racing, even if the final result did not reflect it.
Looking ahead, Verstappen will shift his focus back to Formula One as he prepares for the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix. While the disqualification in Germany is a disappointing episode, it also highlights the fine margins and strict regulations that define motorsport at every level.
