Wildcard Victoria Mboko captured her first WTA title with a stunning comeback against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the Canadian Open final. The 18-year-old Canadian fought back from a set down for the second match in a row, winning 2-6 6-4 6-1 to the delight of the Montreal crowd.

Beginning the year ranked 333rd, she is now projected to rise to world number 34. Mboko described her emotions as overwhelming, admitting she never imagined she would reach the final, let alone win the title. Along the way, she defeated four Grand Slam champions and clinched victory in front of 11,000 fans. News of her triumph even caused a pause in the men's final in Toronto, where Ben Shelton stopped play after the crowd erupted in celebration.

Mboko's slow start pattern continued, with 22 unforced errors in the first set allowing Osaka to take it in just 38 minutes. The second set saw seven breaks of serve, with Mboko gaining control at 5-2 before Osaka broke back. Mboko held her nerve to level the match, then opened the deciding set with a break before Osaka responded. The home favourite then won the last five games, with chants of "Allez Vicky" ringing out. She has played two Grand Slams this year, reaching the third round of the French Open and the second at Wimbledon, and is now preparing for her US Open debut.

Mboko began 2024 with a 22-match unbeaten streak on the ITF Tour and has now proven she can compete with the elite, defeating Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin, Elena Rybakina, and Osaka. Born in Charlotte, she was inspired to play after watching Serena and Venus Williams in Toronto as a child. Her coach, former world number three Nathalie Tauziat, praised her composure and is focused on keeping her healthy for the US Open.

For Osaka, this was her second WTA final of the year and her third since winning the 2021 Australian Open. She had impressed in Montreal, defeating four seeds, but could not sustain her level. The former world number one is working to rebuild her career after a break for maternity leave and will now turn her attention to the Cincinnati Open as she continues preparations for the US Open.
