Novak Djokovic has received a timely boost in his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title after fourth-round opponent Jakub Mensik withdrew from the Australian Open because of an abdominal injury.
The Serbian great was due to face the 20-year-old Czech on Monday night in Melbourne but will now advance directly to the quarter-finals without playing. Djokovic will meet either Italy's fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti or American ninth seed Taylor Fritz for a place in the semi-finals.
Mensik's withdrawal comes amid growing concerns over player fitness at this year's tournament. Two-time champion Naomi Osaka pulled out on Saturday, while several leading contenders have struggled in the extreme heat. Temperatures in Melbourne are expected to climb as high as 42 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, placing further strain on players as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
If results continue to follow the seedings, Djokovic could face reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals before a potential final against world number
one Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic is currently tied with Margaret Court on 24 major titles, with his most recent Grand Slam victory coming at the 2023 US Open.
The 38-year-old has looked sharp in Melbourne, progressing to the last eight without dropping a set. That represents a strong response after a challenging 2025 season, in which he exited all four Grand Slams at the semi-final stage.
Speaking after his third-round win over Botic van de Zandschulp, Djokovic said he felt in good condition but was wary of looking too far ahead. He reflected on lessons learned last season, when strong performances early in tournaments were followed by injuries later on.
Mensik's exit is a significant disappointment for the young Czech, who had been enjoying one of the most promising runs of his career. Seeded 16th, he had reached the fourth round of a major for the first time and was considered one of the most dangerous emerging talents in the draw.
The teenager defeated Djokovic in the final of last year's Miami Masters, a breakthrough victory that helped propel him into the world's top 25. He also arrived in Melbourne in good form after winning a tour title in Auckland.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Mensik explained that an abdominal muscle injury had worsened over recent matches, leading his team and doctors to advise withdrawal. While disappointed, he said reaching the fourth round in Melbourne was a milestone he would remember and thanked fans for their support.
Mensik reached the last 16 with straight-set wins over Pablo Carreno Busta, Rafael Jodar and American Ethan Quinn.
