The London-born player chose this year's US Open as the final tournament of his career, reaching the semi-finals alongside his long-time doubles partner Rajeev Ram. Ram had also announced plans to retire, making the tournament a significant final chapter for the successful partnership.
The US Open was a fitting setting for Salisbury's farewell. In 2023, he and Ram made history by becoming the first men's doubles team to win three consecutive US Open titles. Their run in New York helped cement their place among the tournament's most successful doubles partnerships.
Salisbury leaves the sport as Britain's most successful men's doubles player of the Open era. Alongside his US Open achievements, he won the 2020 Australian Open men's doubles title with Ram. He also claimed two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with American partner Desirae Krawczyk.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Salisbury said he had been considering his future for some time and was now very happy with his choice.
In a statement shared on Instagram, he described tennis as having been his life for as long as he could remember. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunities, experiences and success that came with his career, including the chance to travel the world while making a living from professional tennis.
Salisbury said he had given his career everything he had and felt proud of what he had achieved, adding that he could look back without regrets.
His retirement follows a challenging period earlier this year. Salisbury took a three-month break from tennis after experiencing anxiety while competing on tour. He previously told BBC Sport that although he did not believe the anxiety had significantly affected his performance, it had created a persistent feeling of dread that made life on the road less enjoyable.
Despite those difficulties, Salisbury returned to competition and finished his career with 17 ATP Tour-level titles. His honours also include victories at the season-ending ATP Finals in 2022 and 2023.
After more than a decade at the highest level of professional tennis, Salisbury now leaves the sport with a record that includes six Grand Slam doubles titles and a historic partnership with Ram that helped.
