In a recent appearance on the "Minnie Questions" podcast with Minnie Driver, Courtney Cox opened up about a challenging chapter in her relationship with Snow Patrol musician Johnny McDaid.
Cox recounted their unexpected breakup, which occurred during a couples therapy session three years into their relationship. "We went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries, what we could and couldn't accept about each other," she explained. "Instead, he just broke up within the first minute, and I was so shocked, I was in so much pain."
Despite the initial shock and hurt, the experience became a catalyst for personal growth. Cox revealed she continued seeing the same therapist, a decision that proved beneficial. "It was brutal to go to his office after that for a while, but then it was great," she said.
Looking back, Cox expressed gratitude for the growth this challenging experience fostered. "I'm really thankful a) nothing will ever hurt me that bad again, and then b) most importantly, I completely changed."
Instead of dwelling on anger or resentment, Cox used the breakup as an opportunity for introspection. "I learned how to reclaim my voice, boundaries, what were my motives in life? Like, what was my part in this?" she explained.
This internal work ultimately strengthened their relationship when they rekindled it. "It was a different relationship" thanks to the personal growth she had experienced, Cox shared. Therapy helped her identify patterns from her past that were impacting her present relationships. "It really taught me how I operated in the world," she said.
