Jason Derulo has shared details of a terrifying incident that happened to him in 2013. The singer of "Whatcha Say" revealed how, during the rehearsals for his global tour, which he finally had to postpone, he fell on his head and shattered his neck more than ten years ago.
Jason said, "I broke my neck in 2013," on the July 1st installment of Paris Hilton's I Am Paris podcast. "I was training with this trainer in preparation for my globe tour. "We're going to work on endurance today, so I need you to do these back tucks back-to-back," he said. I broke my C-2 vertebrae when I slipped during one of the back tucks and fell on my head."
"I was immediately struck by a loud crack and thought, 'Holy shit, is this it?'" "Is this how everything ends?" He went on. "All the thoughts you could imagine were going through my head at the time, and I remember thinking to myself, 'S--t, my mom is in the car waiting for me outside.' I didn't want to scare her."
The 34-year-old downplayed the injury, telling his mother, "I think I just hurt myself a little bit," as he held his neck. He then requested to be taken to the hospital "just to check it out."
"The doctor was like, 'Well, I have some good news and some bad news,'" Jason pointed out the X-rays. You can still move all of your limbs and are here with us. You're going to be absent for seven months, that's the terrible news."
And it meant canceling the 22-year-old vocalist of "Ridin' Solo"'s Future History World tour.
"It was"Ihe biggest tour of my life at that point, and I was instantly heartbroken," he said. "I had to disappoint everyone that I knew. Individuals desire to participate in this experience and save their hard-earned money, but all of that was suddenly lost."
And over those seven months, Jason experienced severe emotional suffering.
"I went from having all the reins in my life and being in control of my life to not having any kind of control at all, not being able to tie my shoes, not being able to take a shower of myself," he said. "That was the first time in my life where I felt like I had no control."
But he set himself a schedule while recovering, and he faced the challenges head-on.
"I woke up in the morning, went to the gym, and walked for about 45 minutes every day," Jason said. "After that, I worked in the studio for a very long time, every day at the same time and location. And that's when I wrote my most successful album, Talk Dirty. It's because I created a routine. It's like a common thing in my life. When I'm able to follow a routine, amazing things happen."
