When Gigi Hadid graced the red carpet at the "Deadpool & Wolverine" premiere in New York on Monday, she revived a classic Y2K fashion staple: the yellow triangle top. This summer essential, fondly remembered by many millennials, sparked immediate nostalgia.
The triangle top, also known as a handkerchief or bandana top, has long been synonymous with sex appeal and cool-girl status. Worn famously by icons like Beyoncé and Jennifer Aniston, this top was a hallmark of early 2000s fashion, evoking a sense of effortless style. It epitomized the idea that you were so fashionable you could just tie a piece of fabric around yourself and look amazing. This trend even inspired variations like the scarf top, famously worn by Christina Aguilera.
Hadid styled her yellow triangle top to perfection, pairing it with a matching low-slung, knee-length skirt. She completed the look with peeking black underwear, a wide brown belt, stacked bangles, pointed black pumps, and a coordinated handbag. The entire ensemble, from Miu Miu, was made of leather, a material currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Internet commentators on Reddit even dubbed the look "Fergalicious," referencing singer Fergie's distinctive early 2000s style.
Although the triangle top has been a nostalgic symbol, it has never truly disappeared from the fashion scene. Stars like Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid, and Sydney Sweeney have all donned variations of the style in recent years. Kylie Jenner even wore the same Miu Miu top and skirt set as Hadid's, but in black, just last month.
Hadid was joined on the red carpet by her friend Blake Lively, who wore a lacy red Versace catsuit. Their outfits were a nod to the signature colors of the "Deadpool & Wolverine" franchise, played by Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, while Reynolds and Jackman kept it simple in black suits, Lively and Hadid embraced the theme with more adventurous fashion choices. The result was a mix of styles and materials that avoided looking too coordinated, reminiscent of the distinct looks of Destiny's Child.
Despite their seemingly easy and breezy appearance, triangle tops can be challenging to wear, especially for those with small or large busts. They are also impractical in windy conditions or air-conditioned environments. Given these challenges, Hadid likely had a jacket on hand for the indoor theater, possibly the translucent trench she changed into for the after-party, also in a Wolverine-inspired yellow.
In bringing back the triangle top, Hadid not only paid homage to a beloved fashion era but also showcased her ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary style.
