Tom Cruise is set to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics! The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One star, 62, has been spotted in Paris cheering for Team USA, but sources reveal he's there for a top-secret project. TMZ first reported the news.
Cruise is preparing to perform a skydiving stunt during the Olympics' closing ceremony on August 11. The stunt will serve as a grand handoff for the 2028 Olympic Games to the next host city, Los Angeles.
The plan reportedly involves Cruise starting by swinging from the top of the Stade de France, then descending to the stadium's field while carrying the official Olympic flag. The broadcast will then cut to a pre-recorded two-minute segment showing Cruise traveling by plane from France to L.A. He will then parachute onto the Hollywood sign.
Photos obtained by TMZ show Cruise filming the Hollywood portion of the stunt, dated March 16, 2024. The Hollywood Reporter noted that another planned stunt in L.A. was canceled due to concerns from the LAPD and permitting issues with the California Coastal Commission.
Despite the setback, the closing ceremony is expected to feature impressive moments, including Cruise passing the Olympic flag to various athletes, including a cyclist, skateboarder, and volleyball player.
Cruise reportedly conceived the idea and pitched it to the International Olympic Committee. A longtime supporter of the Olympics, Cruise even carried the Olympic torch in L.A. in 2004, promoting a message of peace and friendship.
He has been in Paris for the early days of the summer games, first appearing at the opening ceremony along the Seine river on July 26.
