When Nina Dobrev was involved in an electric dirt bike accident a few months ago, she was not just physically hurt. The former cast member of The Vampire Diaries opened up about the emotional toll the May crash had taken on her, describing how her prolonged recuperation from a broken knee, meniscus tears, and ACL left her feeling very low.

"Sitting in bed, enjoying the summer while everyone else is gallivanting across Europe on Instagram, with their pain meds and physical pain that they're going through," Dobrev said to E! News on August 7 during the Shiseido Blue Project Beach Clean-Up at the 2024 US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. It was very difficult mentally, to put it simply. Even the pain medications mess with your head."

The 35-year-old went on, "I was depressed, for sure. I experienced extreme hardship."

Dobrev and her partner Shaun White are well-known for being a reasonably active couple, after all. That's why it was startling that her first-ever electric dirt bike ride ended so abruptly.

"I've never rode a horse before, and at first everything went well. I simply lost control of the bike at the very end and ended up doing a wheelie," she recalled. "I landed on one leg, and the pressure of the landing snapped my knee."

Following her surgery, Dobrev intends to avoid riding dirt bikes and engaging in many other riskier activities in order to concentrate on her recuperation.

"I feel like I have a fear now," the former cast member of Perks of Being a Wallflower said. "I used to be really daring and willing to try anything. And now that I've had the injury, perhaps it's because the healing process takes nine months. I've only been here for three and a half months out of nine. It's still not happening that I'll ever get back on a snowboard or dirt bike because I still have to relearn how to walk."
