Machine Gun Kelly recently talked about the effects of his own father's horrific upbringing, which included being put on trial for his father's murder.
The 34-year-old, whose real name is Colson Baker, recently talked about how the events that affected not only MGK's father but also him as a child, as his father and mother were put on trial at the age of nine for the deaths of their father and her husband.
In the Dumb Blonde podcast episode from August 5, MGK said, "The story that was told to me was always that their dad dropped the gun and his head essentially blew off." All of that occurred in the room when I was nine years old, with my dad. He was put on trial for the murder with my grandmother. They were both found not guilty.
The musician, however, was only able to comprehend the effects these traumatic events had on his father as he grew older.
When MGK was younger, she recalled, "I just remember that I used to get so mad at him because he would freak out, like gnarly freak out, if I scared him or if he heard a loud boom or noise." And I would say things like, 'Dude, why are you acting like this? You're meant to be a guy. I started to detest him as a result. However, when you sit there, you can't help but think about a young child who was put on trial at the age of nine for his father's murder.
In due course, the Grammy nominee has come to understand the impact these incidents had on his own life.
"There's no doubt that my father's early experiences influenced me," he said. "I believe I've portrayed myself as someone who can withstand all of the worst aspects of celebrity, including abuse and criticism. Because in order to cope with all those traumas, I became into the person I had always envisioned my dad to be—tough, resilient, and willing to fight anyone who dared them."
However, as he pointed out, his decisions have not been long-term viable. MGK went on, "I'm just now fixing myself." Furthermore, I lack the energy to maintain the persona I formerly had.
The "Emo Girl" singer has already spoken up about the challenging past of his family. MGK discussed the incidents with his now-15-year-old daughter Casie Baker in his 2022 documentary Life in Pink.
According to People, he reads a newspaper item about the 1968 events and remarks in the documentary, "It's crazy because they actually took my dad to trial at 9 years old." "'Cause he never took a chance to heal, all that stuff, it came out on me as I grew up."
Casie's perspective on her father was evidently altered by the chat, as she observed, "I can understand why my dad was so depressed, 'cause like, it kind of passed on through generations to him."
