Jennifer Lopez has officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage. The couple, who rekindled their romance nearly two decades after their initial split, tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022.
The divorce filing was made at the Los Angeles Superior Court on August 20, 2024, coinciding with the second anniversary of their traditional wedding ceremony. According to court documents, Lopez listed their date of separation as April 26, 2024. The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, which could complicate the division of their combined $640 million net worth.
Lopez and Affleck, often referred to as "Bennifer," first got engaged in the early 2000s but called off their wedding in 2003, citing intense media scrutiny as a significant factor. In a 2022 interview with Apple Music, Lopez admitted, "It was the biggest heartbreak of my life. I honestly felt like I was going to die."
Following their reunion in 2021 Lopez described their Las Vegas wedding as "the best night of our lives," adding that a Bluetooth speaker played their brief march down the aisle. A month later, they celebrated with a grander ceremony at Affleck's house in Georgia, surrounded by friends and family. "Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient," Lopez wrote.
Despite their efforts to keep their relationship private, rumors of trouble began to surface earlier this year. Speculation grew when Affleck was reportedly seen moving out of their shared home in Los Angeles. Lopez, meanwhile, was busy with her music and film projects, including the release of her album "This Is Me... Now" and the accompanying documentary "The Greatest Love Story Never Told."
In a Rolling Stone cover story, Lopez spoke about their relationship, referring to it as "having a second chance at real love." She added, "We've both grown. We're the same, and we're different. And that's what's nice. We learned a lot. We know what's real, what's not real. So it's just the game has changed."
This marks Lopez's fourth divorce, having previously been married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, and Marc Anthony, with whom she shares 14-year-old twins. Affleck, on the other hand, was married to actress Jennifer Garner for 13 years before their split in 2018. They share three children together.
