Shawn Mendes has recently stirred conversations by seemingly addressing ongoing speculation about a love triangle involving himself, Sabrina Carpenter, and ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello. This topic came to light during a preview of Mendes’ appearance on John Mayer’s SiriusXM show, How’s Life?, which aired on December 12, 2024.
In the clip, Mendes reflected on navigating relationships, saying, “I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, I express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings.” He admitted this dynamic could have been handled with better communication, adding, “Maybe instead of two days, it could have been two weeks.” He further shared a poignant lesson: “No one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone”.
The drama all started in 2023, when Mendes and Carpenter were rumored to be dating, but Mendes denied it at the time. Not long after, he was spotted reuniting with Cabello at Coachella. Fans have since speculated that Carpenter’s album Short n’ Sweet-particularly songs like Taste and Coincidence-was about her feelings over Mendes reuniting with Cabello. On Taste, she sings about how her presence still lingers in a lover’s life, further feeding speculation about unresolved emotions.
Cabello also appeared to address the incident in her track June Gloom, in which she calls into question a lover’s actions and decisions. Her performances of late, at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, for one, only continued to raise eyebrows as she noticeably halted on the lyric “taste” while performing Señorita-a duet she first performed with Mendes.
Despite the ups and downs in their relationship, Mendes and Cabello have always spoken highly of each other. In previous interviews, Mendes called Cabello “thoughtful and caring”, pinpointing that their communication was really good. Cabello echoed these sentiments, labeling Mendes a “kind, good person” and even went as far as to acknowledge the mutual love between them after their breakup. The on-and-off romance since 2019 has kept fans hooked, who are never tired of observing their interactions.
Neither Mendes, Carpenter, nor Cabello has come forth to confirm the rumors, but their music and public appearances keep the fans in the loop. This saga serves to point out how celebrity relationships and artistic expression interlink, allowing speculation and emotional depth into their respective works.
