Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan are removing their romance from the dojo. Following their flashing of matching rings at a Cobra Kai series finale event on February 12, which sparked engagement rumors, the co-stars confirmed the happy news on social media along with romantic photos from their special night. This marked the beginning of their relationship.
Tanner captioned the couple's joint Instagram post the next day, saying, "We're so happy to finally share that we're engaged." "The closing of one chapter and the celebration of the beginning of another is such a special moment in our lives."
"We're so grateful for the love and support, and even though we prefer to have our private moments, we're excited to share this check-in to our world," the 26-year-old added.
Tanner plays the estranged son of karate champion Daniel LaRusso's longtime rival Johnny Lawrence (played by William Zabka), while Mary, 28, plays Sam LaRusso, the daughter of Daniel LaRusso (played by Ralph Macchio) in the Netflix drama, which is a continuation of the Karate Kid film series. Jon Hurwitz, the creator of the series, couldn't help but claim some of the credit for the romantic relationship that didn't appear on screen.
His post on X (formerly Twitter) made fun of the fact that we are matchmakers first and showrunners second. "With Cobra Kai, our main objective was for Johnny Lawrence's son and Daniel LaRusso's daughter to fall in love in real life. The mission has been completed. I'm so glad for them! An ideal pair!
Since the show's premiere in 2018, the soon-to-be spouses have appeared together on screen, but they have mostly kept their personal relationships private. However, over the years, the two have spoken well of one another. For example, Tanner, who once dated Gen V actress Lizze Broadway, praised Mary's development as a martial artist.
In 2021, he told GQ, "She's really improved a lot over the past few years and is absolutely killing it."
