Brooke Mueller is struggling to stay sober. The actress from Witchouse, who was married to Charlie Sheen from 2008 to 2011, talked candidly about her long battle with addiction and why she thinks she will probably relapse.
In an interview with People on March 25, Brooke stated, "When we're at stage four, it usually means that cycle where you just have these relapses, no matter how well you get, and no matter how many years, it's just a matter of time." "I would be lying to myself if I tried to sugarcoat it, so I want to be honest about it."
The 47-year-old, who has 16-year-old twins named Bob and Max with the Two and a Half Men star, discovered that the road to recovery doesn't get any easier no matter how much time goes by.
As we age, we have more proof of the harm we have caused to ourselves and others, which makes the darkness and shame stick with us even more, she added. We don't want this; no one would want this, so it's unfortunate for us. There must therefore be a mental health component to it, as our pain can occasionally become so intense that we literally—our brains—trick us into thinking that this time it's okay.
That has been the case for Brooke, who during another "slip" after her 2023 relapse recalled using up a bottle of pills in a day and a half.
"I guess I'm lucky in some ways," Brooke said, "but I wouldn't say that this is a great life in any way. I don't mean right now, but picture rebuilding everything. After you finally earned their respect and trust, the children are being placed in your care, and you are continuously discarding everything—you have no idea why or how—because you had no intention of doing so.
Regarding the current state of her relationship with her children, Brooke felt it was best to be honest about her battles with addiction. After all, it seemed inevitable that they would witness her hardest times.
She clarified, "The sad truth is that they grow accustomed to it—Mommy will relapse again one day." "They haven't gone on a date or tried drugs or alcohol yet. What I was doing at the age of fifteen is beyond me. In the end, they were with their group of friends, who just so happened to be excellent kids.
Along with a wonderful group of friends, Brooke also shared her gratitude for Charlie's unwavering support and grace toward the twins. Charlie is also the father of Sami, 21, and Lola, 19, with ex-Denise Richards. He's always had an easier time getting sober than she did, she pointed out.
I believe he believes it's more important to simply make a decision, and then with the addiction [mindset], sometimes we don't have a choice. We get to a point to where we don't have a choice,” she said of the Platoon actor. “The fact he gives me yet another chance shows his deep true heart underneath.”
