Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in “Madame Web” and “Anyone But You,” is reportedly in final negotiations to join the cast of Legendary Entertainment’s live-action adaptation of the iconic Japanese mecha series, “Gundam.” While specific details about her character and the film’s plot remain undisclosed, this development signals significant progress for the long-anticipated project.

The "Gundam" franchise, which debuted in 1979 under the hand of Yoshiyuki Tomino, has been a mainstay of the mecha genre, producing numerous series, films, and a lucrative merchandise business. The narrative typically revolves around large robotic armor, known as Mobile Suits, and addresses profound themes of conflict, politics, and humanity. The franchise has had a firm global fan base and continues to generate billions of dollars with its various media and product lines.

Originally announced in 2021, the live-action show has had a couple of creative team shake-ups. “Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was originally going to direct, with “The Outsiders” writer Brian K. Vaughan penning the script. Recent updates now reveal that “Sweet Tooth” Netflix co-showrunner Jim Mickle has joined the project as director and writer. Mickle will also produce through him and his partner Linda Moran’s production company, Nightshade.

In a notable shift, the film, which was initially set to be released on Netflix, will instead receive a theatrical release. The decision is part of Legendary’s strategy in bringing the expansive “Gundam” universe to the big-screen release, with the hopes of drawing in both longtime fans and newcomers.

Sweeney’s potential gig is a new addition to her roster of high-profile projects. She’ll star in Apple’s thriller “Echo Valley,” premiering on June 13, and will portray boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. Sweeney will also return for the third season of HBO’s “Euphoria” and has roles in Lionsgate’s “The Housemaid” and Colman Domingo’s “Scandalous!”

As the live-action “Gundam” film progresses, fans eagerly search for further updates on casting announcements, plot details, and filming timelines. With an award-winning crew now attached, the adaptation aims to honor the legacy of the classic series while introducing its gripping tale to a larger audience.
