Former child star Haley Joel Osment was arrested on April 8, 2025, at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California for alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. Sergeant Jason Heilman confirmed to PEOPLE that the 37-year-old actor "was booked and is no longer in custody."
According to documents obtained by TMZ, police responded shortly after 2 p.m. following a call reporting an intoxicated individual at the resort. Upon arrival, officers found Osment accompanied by ski patrol members before taking him into custody.
The substance allegedly in Osment's possession has been sent to a lab for testing, as authorities have not yet identified it. The Mono County Sheriff's Office provided Osment's mugshot to several media outlets, while the district attorney will now determine whether to pursue charges.
"This isn't Osment's first brush with the law," noted PEOPLE magazine. In 2018, police were called to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas when the actor was involved in a public verbal altercation on Super Bowl Sunday.
More seriously, at age 18, Osment faced legal trouble after a 2006 car accident when he crashed into a mailbox's brick pillar, flipping his vehicle. He suffered a broken rib and shoulder injuries in the incident. The actor subsequently pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and marijuana possession, resulting in three years probation, mandatory alcohol rehabilitation, and Alcoholics Anonymous attendance.
Sources close to Osment told TMZ that recent personal struggles may have contributed to his current situation. The actor reportedly lost his home in January's devastating Eaton Fire that swept through parts of Los Angeles, causing significant destruction in Altadena and surrounding areas.
"It's been an extremely difficult month," wrote Osment's sister, actress Emily Osment, on Instagram in late January, addressing family losses in the fires.
During a February appearance on the Mentor Buffet podcast, Osment discussed his housing difficulties, saying: "This house that had been my refuge during the pandemic was completely destroyed in the Eaton Fire." He added poignantly, "My heart would be so full every time I drove home. It was such a special place. I loved living there."
Insurance complications have allegedly compounded Osment's difficulties. Sources indicate he found a suitable replacement home but has been unable to secure insurance reimbursement for it, creating additional financial and emotional strain.
Osment rose to fame as a child actor in the late 1990s, earning an Oscar nomination for his role opposite Bruce Willis in "The Sixth Sense." He recently appeared in Zoë Kravitz's 2024 directorial effort "Blink Twice." Representatives for the actor did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding his arrest.
