David Justice has opened up about his short-lived marriage to Halle Berry, offering a rare glimpse into their relationship during his appearance on the All the Smoke podcast. The former baseball star and the Academy Award-winning actress married in 1993 after a whirlwind romance that began the year before. Justice recalled that the proposal came from Berry just five months into dating, and while he said yes, he admitted he wasn’t entirely sure at the time that marriage was the right step.
According to Justice, the early months of their marriage felt like an extension of the honeymoon phase, but cracks soon began to form. Around the five-month mark, he started questioning whether their long-term visions were compatible. Raised in the Midwest with traditional values, Justice imagined a partner who would embrace domestic life, including cooking, cleaning, and showing strong maternal instincts. He claimed Berry didn’t seem interested in those roles, leading him to doubt whether she was the person he wanted to raise children with.
Their careers also created distance. Berry’s acting schedule kept her traveling frequently, while Justice was immersed in his baseball career. The demands of their professions meant they spent long stretches apart, and Justice said their time together lacked the depth and consistency needed to sustain the relationship. He emphasized that there were no scandals or betrayals, just a growing realization that they weren’t building the same kind of life.
Looking back, Justice admitted he was inexperienced in relationships, having only been in one serious romance before Berry. That lack of experience, combined with rigid expectations, made it harder for him to adapt or see alternative ways forward. He now believes that therapy could have helped them bridge their differences, and perhaps even saved their marriage.
By early 1996, the couple separated, and their divorce was finalized in 1997. The end of their marriage was not without tension, with public disputes and accusations making headlines. Justice has maintained his innocence regarding Berry’s claims during the split, insisting the breakdown was rooted in incompatibility rather than any specific act.
Today, Justice reflects on that period with a mix of regret and acceptance. While acknowledging the mistakes and misunderstandings on both sides, he sees it as a lesson in emotional maturity, communication, and the importance of aligning values before making lifelong commitments.
