The families of Matthew Yeomans and Stacey Tourout are in mourning. According to their families, the couple, who use the social media handle Toyota World Runners, passed away in a vehicle accident in British Columbia, Canada, on August 7.
"With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both, tragically succumbing to injuries in an off-road accident," Colleen Tourot, the mother of Stacey, posted "in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much."
"Please remember us and them in your prayers and thoughts as we work through this tragic conclusion to an incredible love story," she continued. We knew they would be together forever, and they are."
Mark Jennings-Bate, manager of Kaslo Search and Rescue, said Stacey and Matthew were located "quite a long ways north in the valley up towards... the village of Trout Lake," approximately 400 miles northeast of Vancouver.
"Our teams were able to get to them efficiently," he said to the CBC. "They arrived quickly despite the lengthy journey. So that was very, very helpful."
The official stated that although they arrived by helicopter, one of the passengers was already dead when they arrived, and the other passed away at a nearby hospital.
Living as nomads in their Toyota, the couple spent their days exploring canyons, mountains, and forests, so they were no strangers to the outdoors. In front of Mount Fitz Roy, which separates Argentina and Chile, Matthew had even asked Stacey to marry him.
"Two truly monumental dreams came true today," he posted on Facebook in April 2024. "This is the exact moment I've been waiting for. I practiced it for years in my head. I knew I could spend the rest of my life with this girl after our first date. We became a remarkable force after traveling the entire length of the Americas in a rig that we built."
"After 16 months and 16 countries we made it here, to the mountain which was on my vision board in my bachelor pad for years," he continued. "AND, I asked Stacey to be mine forever! The moment was perfectly us."
