Tim Burton and Monica Bellucci have confirmed the end of their relationship after nearly three years of dating. The filmmaker, 67, and the Italian actress, 60, announced their separation on September 19 in a joint statement shared with French media. "It is with much respect and deep care for each other that Monica Bellucci and Tim Burton have decided to part ways," the message read.
The couple's romance first drew public attention in February 2023, when they were spotted sharing a kiss on Valentine's Day in Santa Monica, California. They later appeared together at the Rome Film Festival in October 2023, officially stepping out as a couple. At the time, Burton accompanied Bellucci to the premiere of her film Maria Callas: Lettere e Memorie, with reports noting that he appeared "so in love and happy."
Bellucci confirmed their relationship in an interview with Elle France in June 2023 noting that she felt fortunate to have met Burton both personally and professionally. She spoke of her affection for him as a partner while also highlighting her admiration for his creativity and career achievements.
Their professional collaboration came in 2024 when Burton directed Bellucci in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic. She was cast as Delores, a villainous character in the film.
Though their romance blossomed in recent years, Burton and Bellucci's history stretches back further. They first met briefly at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, but reconnected at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon in October 2022. Bellucci presented Burton with the Lumière Lifetime Achievement Award, and speculation about their relationship began soon after.
Both had been in high-profile relationships before. Bellucci was married to French actor Vincent Cassel from 1999 to 2013, and they share two daughters, Deva and Léonie. Burton, meanwhile, spent over a decade with British actress Helena Bonham Carter. The pair, who never married, separated in 2014 but share two children, Billy and Nell.
Despite the breakup, Burton and Bellucci emphasized their mutual admiration and affection, describing their time together as a meaningful chapter in their lives.
