Grimes is displaying her face covered in tattoos. According to the "Genesis" singer (real name Claire Boucher), she got her face inked "a few months ago, and literally nobody noticed," as she shared a picture of herself without makeup that showed a big circle around her left eye.

On October 22, she posted on X (formerly Twitter) that, "Idky this face tattoo is imperceptible, but just for the record, it's my fave tat."

But Grimes—who shares kids X Æ A-Xii, 4; Exa Dark Sideræl, 3; and Techno "Tau" Mechanicus, 3, with ex Elon Musk—didn't go under the needle on a whim. "Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo," she added on Instagram, "but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents."

Calling the cybersigilism design, which blends ancient symbolism with cyberpunk aesthetics, "genius-level work," she gave credit to her tattoo artist, writing, "I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work, esp. on face tats."

"There's a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo," the 37-year-old added. "Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that's sort of underappreciated atm."

Grimes has also always been a fan of unusual body art. In 2021, she had a large, neo-tribal tattoo on her back. Earlier this year, she had a hand-poked design placed across her right shoulder and décolletage.

The artist of "Oblivion" also favors defying conventional notions of beauty.

"Do any other women feel as though beauty culture is choking them to death?" In April, she saw an online advertisement for a cosmetics store and decided to write on X. "Can I go somewhere where someone isn't shoving 'DON'T YOU WANT TO BE BEAUTIFUL?' down my throat?"

"Our culture's insidious treatment of young women is insane," she added. Knowing that I can't shield my daughter from this makes me furious. What a monumental waste of mental space."
