As the world said goodbye to Dr. Jane Goodall, Leonardo DiCaprio delivered a heartfelt eulogy that celebrated the late primatologist's unwavering optimism, wit, and humanity.
Speaking at the Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday, the Oscar-winning actor reflected on their unlikely friendship, forged through shared advocacy for the planet and a deep respect for nature.
"Most people knew her as the icon, the legend," DiCaprio said. "But the Jane I knew was gentle, funny, curious, and unstoppable. She could light up a room with her stories and somehow inspire everyone she met to believe they could do better."
The two first met at a UN Peace Bell ceremony years ago, where both served as Messengers of Peace. Over time, their bond grew through long talks at conferences and quiet dinners, often drifting into late-night discussions about biodiversity, politics, and hope for future generations.
DiCaprio shared a favorite memory from their time together, a photo moment that became symbolic of her character. "I looked straight into the camera," he said. "When I glanced left, Jane was looking directly at me. She told me that's how she preferred it — not about the image, but the connection. That small moment said everything about who she was: an enlightened human being."
Goodall, who passed away on October 1 at age 91, revolutionized the understanding of chimpanzees through her decades of work in Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park. Her son, Hugo, and three grandchildren attended the service, where two of them spoke in her honor.
Though known for his climate activism, DiCaprio admitted he often struggles with the despair that comes with it. "Jane never lingered in despair," he said. "She focused on what could be done. She reminded us that change begins with compassion, that our humanity is our greatest tool."
He ended with a simple vow: "May we all honor her by carrying forward that same fierce belief that we can, and must, do better."
