On Saturday night in Washington, DC, the 48-year-old stepped into the ring for the final time, ending a journey that spanned more than two decades and cemented his place among WWE's greatest figures.
Since debuting in 2002, Cena has accumulated 17 world championships, popularised the instantly recognisable "You Can't See Me" taunt and became the company's most reliable box-office draw during a critical era. Yet his influence has never been limited to titles or catchphrases. To some fans, he is the face of WWE's global expansion. To others, he is a Hollywood actor or a tireless charity ambassador.
Cena's in-ring evolution mirrored WWE's changing identity. He emerged as a brash rookie during the "ruthless aggression" era, reinvented himself as the rapping "Doctor of Thuganomics," and eventually settled into a heroic persona built around resilience and perseverance. While critics occasionally questioned his technical style, industry analysts widely agree that Cena's consistency, work ethic and connection with audiences made him indispensable from the mid-2000s through the 2010s.
