Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama were scheduled to see longtime friends Rob and Michele Reiner on the same night the Hollywood couple were found dead in their Los Angeles home, Michelle Obama revealed during a late-night television appearance.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, Michelle Obama said the news of the Reiners' deaths came as a shock, noting that plans had already been in place to meet them. She described the couple as close friends they had known for many years and said learning of their deaths just hours before the planned meeting was deeply unsettling.

Michelle also pushed back against criticism that emerged on social media following the news, emphasizing that Rob and Michele Reiner were principled, compassionate people who consistently stood for causes they believed in. She described them as individuals who acted with conviction during a time when courage is often in short supply.

"They cared deeply about their family, about this country, and about fairness," she said, adding that their passion should not be mischaracterized or dismissed.

Barack Obama later shared a written statement honoring the couple, praising Rob Reiner's lasting contributions to film and television while highlighting the values that defined both his professional and personal life. The former president wrote that the Reiners lived with purpose and would be remembered for inspiring others through both their work and their actions.

Authorities confirmed that Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, were found dead Sunday afternoon in their Brentwood residence. Investigators determined the couple had been victims of homicide after discovering stab wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested later that evening and has been charged in connection with the killings.

Sources familiar with the family say Nick has struggled with addiction and behavioral issues for years. The investigation remains ongoing as friends, colleagues, and public figures continue to mourn the loss of the Reiners, whose deaths have sent shockwaves through Hollywood and political circles alike.
