Amazon Prime Video’s highly anticipated live action adaptation of God of War continues to take shape with the casting of Max Parker in a key role. Variety has confirmed that Parker has joined the series as Heimdall, one of the prominent gods from Norse mythology and a major figure in the world of the franchise.
Parker joins previously announced cast members Ryan Hurst, who leads the series as Kratos, and Teresa Palmer, who is also set to play a central role. The series is based on the two most recent God of War video games, which reimagined the long running franchise by shifting its focus to Norse mythology and to a more intimate story centered on fatherhood, grief, and legacy.
The show follows Kratos and his ten year old son Atreus after the death of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Together, father and son embark on a dangerous journey to fulfill Faye’s final wish, which is to spread her ashes from the highest peak in the realms. Along the way, they encounter powerful gods, fearsome creatures, and moral challenges that test both of them. Kratos struggles to guide his son toward becoming a better god, while Atreus pushes his father to reconnect with his humanity.
Heimdall, the character Parker will portray, is described as the Watchman of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons. He is a god with the extraordinary ability to sense and anticipate what is about to happen at any given moment. According to the official character description, Heimdall is handsome, dynamic, and deeply frustrated by how he is perceived within his family. Feeling underappreciated by his father and underestimated by the other gods, he is constantly searching for ways to elevate his status and increase his power within the divine hierarchy. This internal conflict makes him a compelling addition to the series’ growing roster of complex characters.
Max Parker is coming off a leading role in the Netflix military dramedy Boots, where he played Sgt. Liam Robert Sullivan. He is also known for his work in series such as Vampire Academy, Emmerdale, and Blood, Sex and Royalty. Parker is represented by Thrive Talent, TalentWorks, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Myman Greenspan.
God of War has already received a two season order from Amazon, signaling strong confidence in the project. Pre production is currently underway in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.
The executive producing team includes Maril Davis alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Co executive producers on the series include Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis. The show is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, produced in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, which operates under an overall deal at Sony TV.
With production moving forward and casting announcements continuing, the God of War series is steadily building anticipation as it prepares to bring one of gaming’s most acclaimed modern stories to live action television.
