Martin Short has admitted to a wedding day mishap that almost overshadowed the September 2025 nuptials of Selena Gomez and music producer Benny Blanco in Santa Barbara, California.
The veteran comedian recalled the moment during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he described accidentally cutting into the couple's wedding cake before the bride and groom had officially done so.
Short explained that he was seated with around a dozen members of the Only Murders in the Building cast at the reception, including longtime collaborator Steve Martin and actor Paul Rudd. The outdoor celebration featured large tents with smaller lounge style seating areas, each arranged with couches and chairs for groups of guests.
According to Short, a cake was positioned near their section, leading him to believe it was one of several desserts placed around the venue. After hours of festivities, and with the main cake still uncut, he encouraged Steve Martin not to leave without having a slice.
With a fork already in hand, Short said he casually cut into the cake, only for his table to erupt in shouts of alarm. He quickly realised the dessert was in fact the couple's official wedding cake, which was not scheduled to be presented for another hour.
The actor told Kimmel that Martin was so shocked he visibly changed colour, while Short attempted to repair the damage using his fork. A photo of the heart shaped cake, bearing a Just Married message and a miniature bride and groom topper, was shown to the audience, revealing the attempted cover up.
Moments later, the wedding coordinator rushed over and summoned the chef, who carried out what Short jokingly described as emergency surgery. The cake was restored well enough to return to display, though faint marks from the incident remained visible.
He said he briefly considered leaving the reception altogether, even asking Paul Rudd if they should make a quiet exit. Instead, he stayed and later learned that word of the mishap had reached her.
