After months of speculation that the Oscar-winning actress had declined a proposal from the musician, Halle has confirmed that the two are, in fact, engaged. She addressed the rumors during a February 6 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, explaining that the story circulating online was simply misunderstood.
"There's been some confusion," Halle told Fallon, noting that she and Van have been together for nearly six years. She clarified that while Van did ask her to marry him, she never turned him down. "I did not say no," she said. "We just don't have a date, but of course I said yes. I would marry him."
The actress added with a smile that Van had already "put a little ring on it," briefly showing off her engagement ring on camera. Though only visible for a moment, the piece appeared to be a bold gold ring featuring dark detailing and a diamond centerpiece.
Halle's confirmation comes months after Van suggested that the proposal was still unresolved. During a joint interview with Today.com in June, the 55-year-old musician shared that he had asked Halle to marry him but was still waiting for an answer at the time. He joked that the proposal was "just out there floating" and encouraged others to help persuade her.
Halle later explained that her hesitation had nothing to do with doubt about their relationship. Having been married three times before to David Justice, Eric Benét and Olivier Martinez, she said she no longer felt that marriage was necessary to validate love. Van, who has been married once, shared a similar perspective. According to Halle, their bond never depended on a ring or formal commitment.
Still, the idea of marriage was never off the table. Halle later reflected that if she were to marry again, Van would be the right person. She described their desire to wed as something rooted in choice rather than obligation, calling it an expression they would like to make together.
The strength of their relationship, she says, was built long before romance entered the picture. Introduced by Van's brother, the pair spent significant time talking and sharing openly before becoming physically involved. Halle credits that emotional honesty for their lasting connection. As a mother of two, she says the foundation they created through trust and communication has been key to sustaining their relationship over the years.
