Being a parent can make relationships more complicated.
Sarah Shahi had firsthand experience with this. One month after the Sex/Life actress confirmed that she and costar Adam Demos had broken up following five years of dating, she shared insight into their decision to split.
"Without airing any kind of laundry 'cause I'm not here for that," Sarah explained on the Feb. 10 episode of the Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari podcast, "I do think when you have kids, it's hard to build a life when you have children unless the person truly, truly, truly wants that as well."
She emphasized that it is not about Adam, but about how she cares for her and ex-husband Steve Howey's 16-year-old son William, as well as 10-year-old twins Violet and Knox.
"I show up as a parent in a very specific way," the 46-year-old explained. "I parent as I was parented. For my mother, we grew up in Texas as a single mother with three children. "There were no boundaries."
"We could walk into our mom's bedroom at any time, and we walked into the bathroom at any time," she said later. "I think that can be a little challenging for somebody who may not be used to having kids."
Although she and Adam—who met on the set of the Netflix series in 2021—were a perfect pairing romantically, their relationship required more than that.
"It's great for love to be easy," she reflected, "but then the life stuff should also not be so difficult."
While Sarah and Adam's relationship did not work out, the Person of Interest actress does not rule out finding her own paradise in the future. But this time, she is taking a different approach to dating.
"I want my next relationship to be about me," she told me. "I am not looking for a stepparent. I just want a boyfriend—someone who will take me out to the beach and let me sweat and have sex all day."
"I just want someone to purely service me," said her colleague, "and if that grows into something else, then great."
