He might be wearing a medal, but Sturla Holm Lægreid doesn’t feel like a winner right now.
After winning bronze in the men's 20km biathlon at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, the Olympian broke down in tears and apologized to a woman in his life.
"There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today," Sturla said in an NRK interview that was translated from Norwegian. "Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person on the planet. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life: I was unfaithful.
Although he did not name the woman, Sturla burst into tears, admitting he had told her about his infidelity "about a week ago," adding, "This has been the worst week of my life."
"I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her," he says. "Sport has come second in the last few days. Yes, I would like to share this with her."
And Sturla explained that because he won a bronze medal, he felt it was his responsibility to admit his mistake.
"I try to be a good role model, and I did something stupid," he complained. "You must admit when you did something. You can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”
Sturla's emotional confession isn't the only Olympics 2026 moment that has touched people's hearts. Lindsey Vonn chose Milano Cortina for her grand comeback to alpine skiing following her initial 2019 retirement, but she crashed during the women's downhill race on February 8 and had to be airlifted out of the games for an emergency procedure.
Despite the setback, the Olympic gold medalist expressed her pride at having "dared to dream."
"While yesterday did not end the way I had hoped, and despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets," she wrote in an Instagram post on February 9. "Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible experience I will never forget. Knowing I stood there with a chance to win was a victory in and of itself.”
