Julianne Hough exudes life on the big screen.
Eight years after her last leading film role, the Dancing With the Stars presenter is set to return to the screen with Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming film The Bride!, a remake of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein and the 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein. And for Julianne, the opportunity to join the cast was exciting.
"It was amazing," she told Deadline after the film's London premiere, in a video posted to X on February 26. "I honestly couldn't imagine a different project."
“This was truly iconic in so many ways,” the 37-year-old continued, “and the fact that I got to be a part of Maggie's vision—this message of feminism through empowerment and rock and roll punk. I just think it's so incredible, and she's just such an amazing director.”
Julianne was very pleased to see the finished film on screen, especially since she stars in a movie within The Bride! The actress "didn't really participate in the actual film," stating, "I'm having a new experience with all of you as well."
In addition, the Rock of Ages alum had the opportunity to collaborate with Maggie and her brother Jake Gyllenhaal, who also stars in the production.
"Jake is amazing and very professional," Julianne added. "He's obviously been doing this forever, and just the humility and excitement that he had to come into the studio, and we worked together, and it was so much fun."
Maggie was also thrilled to have Jake and her husband Peter Sarsgaard appear in the film, especially since it was the first time she and her sibling had worked together since 2001's Donnie Darko.
"I love working with both of them," Maggie told Entertainment Weekly in December, "and Jake was almost like icing on the cake."
"He came in, and we fit him in when he was available, and he wore this great tuxedo," she told me. "He danced and sang. He was incredibly humorous, generous, loving, and a joy to have on set."
Furthermore, having Peter—with whom she shares two daughters—on set while filming "a huge movie with such a massive scope" was "such a gift" to her.
"These are really brilliant actors," Maggie added. "It's a total gift to have them."
