On Tuesday, July 15, the 28-year-old pageant winner reposted a graphic to her Instagram Stories that highlighted how comments about someone's appearance can affect more people than the intended target.
The message read, "Did you ever consider, your comment about another person's body is also hitting everyone else in the room. Everyone."
Donegan shared the post shortly after performing "God Bless America" during the MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia on July 14, where she appeared before a national audience.
The reigning Miss America captured the crown on Sept. 7 after first winning the Miss New York title earlier in the year. Her victory earned her a $50,000 tuition scholarship, and she also received an additional $3,000 scholarship after winning the talent competition for her vocal performance.
While many supporters celebrated her achievement, including friends whose emotional reactions to her victory gained attention on TikTok, Donegan also faced criticism online. Some social media users focused on her appearance, particularly commenting on her makeup and styling during the national pageant.
Speaking previously about dealing with online criticism, Donegan acknowledged that public figures often become targets for negative comments. However, she emphasized that it is important not to let hurtful opinions define one's self-worth.
She explained that she has learned to be intentional about the feedback she absorbs, choosing instead to focus on the encouragement and support she receives from family, friends, and well-wishers.
According to Donegan, surrounding herself with people who uplift and believe in her has been one of the most valuable ways to manage the pressures that come with holding a public title.
Despite her confidence, the beauty queen admitted that she is still human and that negative comments about her appearance can be painful.
She said she would naturally prefer not to hear hurtful remarks, especially those directed at the way she looks. At the same time, she recognizes that the internet is an open platform where people are free to express their opinions, even if those opinions are not always kind.
Donegan added that she understands she cannot please everyone, but her focus remains on treating others with compassion and using her platform to make a positive difference.
She said her goal as Miss America is to ensure people feel seen, valued, and loved. If even one person is positively impacted through her work, she believes she has fulfilled her purpose as the titleholder.
