Nina Dobrev is leaving behind her signature brunette appearance and stepping into a dramatically different look for her latest film role.
The Vampire Diaries actress has debuted blonde, voluminous curls while filming It Happened One Summer, the upcoming adaptation of Tessa Bailey's bestselling romance novel. The transformation marks a noticeable departure from the dark hair that has long been associated with the actress, giving audiences an early glimpse of how she is approaching her new character, Piper Bellinger.
Dobrev, 37, was photographed and filmed on the New York set wearing her new blonde hairstyle while dressed in a striking red halter dress. The look is part of her transformation into Piper, a Los Angeles based influencer whose carefully constructed lifestyle changes dramatically after she is sent to the Pacific Northwest.
The actress first offered fans a preview of the transformation earlier this month when she shared behind the scenes photographs from the production. In one image, she could be seen wearing a large sun hat, with blonde curls visible underneath, while posing alongside co star Virginia Gardner and holding a clapperboard.
"Filming has officially begun," Dobrev wrote in the Aug. 3 post.
She later showcased more of the blonde transformation as filming continued in New York. The new appearance has quickly attracted attention because of how different it is from her familiar brunette image. Recent coverage has described the transformation as one of Dobrev's most dramatic hair changes for a role.
In It Happened One Summer, Dobrev plays Piper Bellinger, a wealthy Los Angeles socialite and influencer whose life takes an unexpected turn when she is sent away to a small fishing community in the Pacific Northwest. There, she encounters Brendan Taggart, a brooding sea captain portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin.
The film brings Bailey's popular romance novel to the screen after the book developed a substantial following among romance readers, particularly through BookTok. Bailey has expressed enthusiasm about Dobrev and Hoechlin taking on the roles, describing both actors as talented and funny and saying she is excited to see their interpretation of the characters.
For Bailey, one of the most important elements of Piper's story is her emotional vulnerability. Beneath her glamorous public image, Piper struggles with questions about who she is beyond the party lifestyle she has built around herself.
That internal conflict is expected to become central to her relationship with Brendan as the story unfolds.
With production now underway, Dobrev's transformation offers the first major visual indication that she is fully embracing Piper's world.
