Gwyneth Paltrow has responded to criticism surrounding a reported dinner she was set to host in honor of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, turning the controversy into a joke on social media.
The controversy began after entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni reported in his Aug. 18 Puck newsletter that invitations were being sent for a "private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of Sam Altman" in the Hamptons on Aug. 29.
The reported invitation quickly circulated online, with some users criticizing Paltrow for appearing to host an exclusive gathering for Altman, whose company developed ChatGPT. Some commenters described the reported event as "tone-deaf," while others criticized Paltrow's association with the technology industry.
Paltrow appeared to respond to the attention on Aug. 20 by sharing a series of parody invitations on Instagram. Instead of Altman, the recreated invitations listed fictional or internet personalities including M3GAN, Samantha Jones from Sex and the City, Shrek, Jessica Rabbit and viral character Chanty Beluga.
She accompanied the posts with the caption: "We're serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request."
The response came as questions also emerged over the authenticity of the original invitation. Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh said on X that the invitation was "likely AI-generated." Representatives for Paltrow and OpenAI were contacted for comment, according to reports.
Paltrow has previously spoken openly about her interest in artificial intelligence. In a 2025 episode of her Goop podcast, she said she had created several GPTs for different uses, including information related to Goop and health.
"I've built some GPTs that I upload specific information for this incredible knowledge base," she said.
She has also argued that AI is becoming unavoidable while stressing the importance of human creativity. "The train's left the station," Paltrow said during an appearance in New York earlier this year.
