Nearly seven years after her last acting appearance, Holly Marie Combs has confirmed that she has retired from acting, saying the roles reaching her have become increasingly unappealing and that her priorities have changed.
The actress, best known for her role as Piper Halliwell in the supernatural television series Charmed, discussed her decision during an August 25 episode of the House of Halliwell podcast. Combs explained that the opportunities coming her way no longer gave her the excitement she once felt about acting.
According to Combs, the number of interesting opportunities available to actresses becomes smaller with age, particularly for women in their 40s and 50s. Although she acknowledged that Hollywood has made progress in addressing ageism, she said the roles she encountered were increasingly less compelling.
For Combs, however, her decision was not based solely on the changing entertainment industry. Family responsibilities also played an important role.
The actress is a mother to three children, Finley, Riley and Kelley, and said spending time with her family became particularly important during the COVID 19 pandemic. At the time, she had teenagers and a preteen at home, creating what she described as a period filled with chaos and family demands.
Since stepping away from acting, Combs has remained involved in other ventures. She cohosts the House of Halliwell podcast, which revisits Charmed and its legacy, while also being involved in numerous other businesses.
Despite officially retiring, Combs admitted that she occasionally misses performing.
She explained that acting offered a unique form of escape, allowing her to temporarily step away from her own life and become another character. That experience, she said, could be peaceful even when the material itself was dramatic.
For an actress who spent decades working in television, the emotional connection to the profession has therefore not disappeared completely.
Combs became a household name through Charmed, which ran for eight seasons and developed a devoted international fan base. She later appeared in Pretty Little Liars and other television projects, but her last on screen acting appearance came nearly seven years ago.
Her retirement does not necessarily mean the door is permanently closed. Combs suggested that she could reconsider acting in the future, particularly once her youngest child graduates from high school.
With more free time on the horizon, the actress acknowledged that she might eventually feel ready to return in some capacity.
For now, however, Combs appears comfortable with her decision to step away from Hollywood.
Her choice reflects a broader reality in the entertainment industry, where long careers can eventually give way to changing priorities, family responsibilities and a desire for more meaningful creative opportunities.
While fans may miss seeing her on screen, Combs has made clear that retirement is not a rejection of acting itself. Instead, it appears to be a decision to wait for a role that genuinely gives her a reason to return.
