Finnish influencer Olivia Oras died on Sept. 3 at the age of 27, with her family alleging that her death followed an aesthetic procedure that went wrong.

A spokesperson for Oras's family confirmed her death to PEOPLE and said the family had reported the matter to police. The Helsinki Police Department said on Sept. 9 that it had opened an investigation into the death on suspicion of aggravated manslaughter after receiving a request to investigate three days earlier.

Police said the investigation remains in its early stages and that no additional information was available.

Oras's parents, artist Johanna Oras and art dealer Reijo Oras, told Finnish investigative outlet Yle MOT that their daughter lost consciousness while under anesthesia before undergoing a cosmetic procedure at a private clinic in Helsinki. According to the report, she was taken to Helsinki University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding Oras's death.

Oras became well known in Finland as a teenager after launching her Instagram account at age 14. She built a large following online and, in 2016, became the focus of the documentary The Perfect Selfie. The film followed her for about a year and a half and explored her relationship with social media and the attention surrounding her online presence.

After the documentary was released, Oras said she became anxious and eventually shut down her social media accounts. In 2017, she moved to Amsterdam, where she worked at a café and planned to attend a university.

Her life took a tragic turn when she witnessed a friend die by suicide in her apartment building. In a 2024 interview with Finnish outlet Ilta-Sanomat, Oras recalled struggling with the experience and repeatedly reliving what she had seen.

Oras later returned to Helsinki, where she developed an addiction to sleeping pills and alcohol. She entered an addiction treatment facility in 2022 and spent a month receiving treatment.

In the final years of her life, Oras focused on advocacy and technology. She founded Oras Respiratus Ry, a nonprofit supporting pulmonary disease research, after her father was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

She also worked in the technology sector, serving as Head of Community at artificial intelligence startup Ikon AI and Chief Marketing Officer at wellness technology company PALL0 by Ai2Ai.

The investigation into Oras's death is ongoing.
