Britain's Prince George has begun a significant new chapter in his education, arriving at Eton College on Tuesday as the latest member of the royal family to pass through the prestigious Berkshire institution.
The 13 year old, who is second in line to the British throne, was accompanied by his parents, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as he arrived at the historic school. Despite the wet weather, George appeared relaxed as the family crossed the cobblestoned School Yard before being welcomed by Eton's headmaster Simon Henderson and provost Sir Nicholas Coleridge.
"Welcome, good luck, enjoy it," Henderson told the young prince during their brief exchange, marking the beginning of an educational experience that carries considerable historical and royal significance.
George's arrival also continued a family tradition. His father, Prince William, attended Eton from 1995, while his uncle, Prince Harry, joined the school in 1998. William was the first future British monarch to attend Eton, making George's decision particularly notable as he prepares for his eventual responsibilities as king.
The young royal previously attended Lambrook School near Windsor, where he studied alongside his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. His move to Eton means he will now embark on his secondary education separately from them.
Founded by King Henry VI in 1440, Eton is one of Britain's most recognised fee paying boarding schools. Located close to Windsor Castle, the institution educates boys between the ages of 13 and 18 and is known for its distinctive traditions, including the formal black tailcoat, waistcoat and pinstriped trousers worn by pupils.
The school has also produced an extraordinary list of prominent alumni. Twenty former British prime ministers attended Eton, including David Cameron and Boris Johnson. Its former pupils also include actors Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne.
For the current academic year, annual fees are reported at approximately £63,000 ( approximately $73,000), underscoring the exclusive nature of the institution.
Beyond its academic reputation, Eton will offer George an environment steeped in British history and tradition. His education there is expected to provide not only conventional academic preparation but also experiences that may prove valuable as he grows into his future public role.
For now, however, George begins as a teenager starting school like thousands of others, even if his classroom journey carries an unusually royal destination.
