Carlos Alcaraz's defence of the US Open title has ended in dramatic fashion after the Spaniard suffered a five set quarterfinal defeat to American Ben Shelton in one of the tournament's most memorable matches.
The contest finished at 3:34 a.m. local time, making it the latest completed match in US Open history. Despite the extraordinary hour, a large crowd remained inside Arthur Ashe Stadium throughout the four hour and 28 minute battle, producing a remarkable atmosphere as both players pushed themselves to their physical limits.
The match only began at around 11 p.m. after earlier matches delayed the start of the night session. Shelton eventually prevailed 6 7, 6 1, 6 3, 1 6, 7 6, winning the deciding 10 point match tiebreak 10 7.
The victory represented the biggest win of Shelton's career. Before facing Alcaraz, the American had lost all 17 of his previous matches against players ranked inside the world's top three. He had also failed to defeat Alcaraz in their three previous meetings.
Shelton's victory has strengthened American hopes of producing a homegrown men's singles champion at the US Open for the first time since Andy Roddick lifted the trophy in 2003. The 23 year old will now face compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals, guaranteeing an American finalist.
Alcaraz entered the tournament after spending more than four months away from competitive tennis because of a wrist injury. His return had exceeded expectations, but the lack of match practice appeared to become increasingly evident during the exhausting quarterfinal.
The Spaniard committed 53 unforced errors and struggled with his forehand and serve at important moments. Nevertheless, he showed the fighting spirit that has helped establish him among tennis's leading players, recovering from two sets to one down to force a deciding set.
Shelton remained composed when it mattered most. His powerful left handed serve, aggressive returning and disciplined defence repeatedly disrupted Alcaraz's rhythm.
The American said the match felt like a war and described it as the most enjoyable contest of his career.
For Alcaraz, the defeat ended an 18 match unbeaten run at Grand Slam tournaments. Despite the disappointment, he remained philosophical, saying he could not be disappointed after coming so close to victory.
Shelton now carries the hopes of a nation into the semifinals, while Alcaraz's remarkable comeback season continues with a painful but encouraging reminder that returning to the highest level requires more than talent alone.
