Megan Thee Stallion has opened up about the emotional toll of her breakup with NBA star Klay Thompson, revealing that the relationship left her feeling disconnected from herself as she tried to fit into another person's life.

The Grammy winning rapper shared the reflection in an interview with InStyle, five months after confirming that she and Thompson had ended their relationship after about a year together. At the time, Megan appeared to suggest that a lack of fidelity had contributed to the breakup.

Looking back, the 31 year old said the experience had been particularly difficult, describing the period as feeling like she had been put through an emotional "washing machine and dryer."

However, Megan's reflections suggest that the breakup became an opportunity to reassess her identity and priorities.

"I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn't belong, trying to fit myself into someone else's life," she said. "I was losing myself a little bit. I am now in the space of finding me again."

The rapper also spoke about the importance of recognising when a relationship consistently creates discomfort or anxiety. She encouraged people to understand that relationships should not require them to abandon who they are.

For Megan, maintaining her independence is particularly important because of the demands of her career. She has established herself as one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary hip hop while expanding into other areas of entertainment and business.

She recently added Broadway to her growing list of professional achievements and continues to release music, interact with fans and pursue creative projects.

Megan made it clear that she has no intention of becoming less ambitious to accommodate a romantic partner.

"I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me," she said, explaining that she wants a partner who understands that she is her own person and her own boss.

She also emphasised that she expects equality in a relationship rather than allowing a partner to dominate her life or career.

"I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner," she said.

The experience has also changed the way she views being single. Rather than seeing solitude as something negative, Megan said she has rediscovered happiness while spending time on her own.

She described herself as enjoying simple moments again and feeling more carefree.

Her message to people recovering from heartbreak was equally direct. Megan stressed that another person's actions should never determine an individual's sense of worth.

"Somebody not seeing your values doesn't make your value go down," she said.

As she considers dating again, Megan said she now has a clearer understanding of what she wants, what she will accept and where she will draw the line.

For the rapper, the end of the relationship appears to have marked not simply a goodbye to a partner, but a return to herself.
